Digitalstrategie und Projektarbeit vor Ort für das Sammlerformat der MCH Group

MCH Group / Grand Basel

Die Aufgabe

Die MCH Group, Veranstalterin der Art Basel, wollte mit der Grand Basel ein zweites Format etablieren: keine Kunstmesse, sondern eine Bühne für automobile Sammlerstücke. Fahrzeuge sollten nicht als Produkte gezeigt werden, sondern als Kulturgut — kuratiert, inszeniert und einzeln erzählt.

Für ein Format ohne Vorbild reicht externe Beratung nicht aus. dgtl.ai wurde Teil des Projektteams: über 18 Monate regelmäßig vor Ort in Zürich und Basel, eingebunden in die tägliche Projektarbeit der MCH Group — nicht als externer Dienstleister mit Statusterminen, sondern als Teil des Teams, das die Entscheidungen im Alltag getroffen hat.

Website und Ticketshop liefen über die Systeme der MCH Group, die Event-App kam von einem Schweizer Softwarehaus, die interaktiven Exponat-Aufnahmen von einem spezialisierten Fotoproduktionsteam. dgtl.ai entwickelte die digitale Strategie und war der Knotenpunkt, an dem diese Gewerke inhaltlich zusammenliefen.

Der Ansatz 

Inhouse statt Beratung auf Distanz

Ein Format ohne Vorbild lässt sich nicht am Reißbrett planen und dann liefern. Die Anforderungen änderten sich mit jeder Erkenntnis aus dem laufenden Aufbau — welche Exponate wie inszeniert werden, wie der Verkaufsprozess wirklich läuft, was ein Sammlerpublikum von einer Messe erwartet, die es in dieser Form noch nicht gab.

Deshalb war die Arbeitsweise keine klassische Projektsteuerung mit Abgabeterminen, sondern kontinuierliche Präsenz im Projektteam der MCH Group. Entscheidungen zu Content, Datenflüssen und der Zusammenarbeit mit den beteiligten Gewerken entstanden direkt im Team, nicht in Statusberichten danach.

Die Exponate

116 Fahrzeuge, 354 Bilder, eine Belichtungstechnik wie aus einem Film

Für die Webseite der Messe wurden 116 Fahrzeuge inszeniert und in 354 interaktiven LuxMatrix-Aufnahmen festgehalten — entwickelt und verantwortet von Zeitfeld, produziert von Cinegramm.

Die Technik ist eine invertierte Bullet-Time-Aufnahme: Statt wie im Film mit 36 Kameras um ein Objekt herum aufzunehmen, standen hier drei Kamerapositionen fest. Um das Fahrzeug herum waren, hinter Gaze verborgen, 36 Blitzlichter aufgebaut. Beim Betrachten reagiert das Bild interaktiv auf diese Beleuchtung — der Schlussframe zeigt eine Komposition aus allen Belichtungsschritten.

Ein Beispiel dieser Technik lässt sich hier erleben
mit der Maus über das Bild fahren, um eines der 116 Fahrzeuge in Bewegung zu erleben.

Die inhaltliche Arbeit dahinter lag ebenfalls bei dgtl.ai: Weil die Aussteller aus dem Handel kamen und das kuratorische Prinzip zunächst nicht kannten, wurden die Fahrzeuginformationen zu großen Teilen selbst recherchiert und zweisprachig aufbereitet.

Der Ticketshop

Wie eine entfernte Hürde die Conversion um 244 % steigerte

Der Ticketverkauf lief über die Systeme der MCH Group und damit über deren Konzernrichtlinie: Wer ein Ticket kaufen wollte, musste zuvor ein MCH-Konto anlegen. Für ein Publikum, das spontan auf eine neue Messe aufmerksam wird, war das eine Hürde, die den Kaufprozess über das vertretbare Maß hinaus verlängerte.

Als Teil des Projektteams identifizierte dgtl.ai den Zusammenhang in den Verkaufsdaten und setzte die Entkopplung durch: Ticketkauf ohne Registrierung, Kontoeinrichtung optional über eine Follow-up-Mail im Anschluss.

Am ersten Tag nach der Umstellung stieg die Conversion Rate um 244 % gegenüber dem Vortag.

Vom Messeauftritt zur ganzjährigen Community

Nach der Messe übernahm dgtl.ai die Social-Media-Kanäle der Grand Basel. Aus einem Format, das an drei Messetage gebunden war, wurde ein ganzjährig sichtbares Thema.

Die redaktionelle Linie folgte demselben Prinzip wie die Exponat-Darstellung: das Fahrzeug als Kulturgut, nicht als Kaufobjekt.

In dieser Zeit wuchs die Community auf rund 25.000 Follower.

Das Ergebnis 

Die Grand Basel fand im September 2018 in Basel statt. Gezeigt wurden kuratierte automobile Sammlerstücke — von Vorkriegsfahrzeugen bis zu Einzelstücken der Gegenwart. Das Format war als Ableger der Art Basel angelegt: derselbe kuratorische Anspruch, ein anderes Sammelgebiet.
