Why
“Let’s do it like last year”
isn’t a good plan

“Let’s do it like last year.”
It sounds pragmatic. It saves time. And at first glance, it even feels like a solid strategy.
But it rarely is.

Especially in the world of events, attendee management, and digital platforms, this sentence is a sure sign that important opportunities are being missed – or ignored on purpose. Because “like last year” rarely leads to better results. Usually, it just leads to easier ones.

1. Last year isn’t this year

Technology evolves. Attendee behavior changes. Stakeholder expectations rise. What felt innovative in 2025 may be standard – or outdated – by 2026.

Example:

Last year, a simple invitation and registration form were enough.

This year, participants expect AI-powered UX flows, a mobile check-in app, and personalized communication.

If you replicate instead of reflect, you risk designing for a world that no longer exists.

2. Standing still means falling behind

Events thrive on relevance, emotion, and individuality. Copying a concept might save time – but it also kills impact. “Copy & paste” thinking leads to:

  • no excitement in the team,
  • no innovation for participants,
  • and no differentiation in the market.

If you do the same thing every year, you can’t expect anything to improve.

3. New context, same old plan

“Like last year” ignores what’s changed:

  • new budgets?
  • new audiences?
  • new platforms or APIs?
  • new legal requirements (GDPR, accessibility, sustainability)?

Relying on last year’s setup means you’re working with yesterday’s assumptions.

4. No reflection = lost potential

Every event is a learning opportunity. If you don’t use it, you waste:

  • insights into attendee satisfaction,
  • opportunities to optimize workflows,
  • scalability for future projects.

Our tip: Make structured retrospectives a fixed part of your event planning process.

5. Innovation needs courage, not comfort

If you want to excite people – surprise them.

If you want to shape your market – think ahead.

If you want lasting success – you need more than a look back. You need a vision.

That’s why, for us, “same same” isn’t a badge of quality – it’s a warning sign.

6. Conclusion

“Like last year” might sound reasonable – but it’s often a synonym for standing still.

Those who shape the market think forward, not backward.

Those who inspire don’t copy – they create.

Our monthly feature updates should be proof enough 🙂

Better question:
“What worked well? What can we improve? And what do we need this year to truly inspire?”

Or, as we like to say: Let's build it better - not just again.
